Drug Discovery

No Description

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

In medicine, biotechnology and pharmacology, drug discovery is the process by which drugs are discovered and/or designed

Drug discovery is the process through which potential new medicines are identified. It involves a wide range of scientific disciplines, including biology, chemistry and pharmacology.

Traditionally many drugs and other chemicals with biological activity have been discovered by studying allelopathy – chemicals that organisms create that affect the activity of other organisms in the fight for survival.

It can take 10-15 years and over £500 million to develop a drug from an initial concept, test its safety and effectiveness in humans and then get it into the hospital market.

Once a medicine has successfully completed clinical trials, the information is submitted to government regulators. This is the formal application to seek approval for the new medicine. The process must be followed in every territory in which we hope to offer the new treatment to doctors and patients. In the US, we submit this information to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Drug discovery is brilliant and has gotten really successful in the past 20 years

Once researchers identify a promising compound for development, they conduct experiments to gather information on:

How it is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted.

New things are being discovered everyday such as molecules for new drugs there are many teams around the world working on discovering new drugs
