Early Childhood

  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born at noon on Tuesday, January 15, 1929 in Atalanta, Georgia.
  • He was the first son and the second child born to Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King.
  • He wasn't allowed to play with other kids that were Caucasian because he was African American.
  • Dr. King had to suffer injustice all his childhood.

DR. KING'S LIFE

  • In 1947, Dr. King was ordained a minister.
  • In 1948, he graduated from Morehouse College in Atlanta,Georgia.

DR. KING'S FAMILY

  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. married Coretta Scott of Marion, Alabama on June 18, 1953.
  • The ceremony took place on the lawn of Scott's home in Marion, Alabama.
  • Dr. King later had four children, Yolanda Denise, Martin Luther III, Dexter Scott, and Bernice Albertine.
  • He soon became a pastor of his own church in Montgomery.

the rebellion

  • In 1955 through 1956 Rosa Parks wouldn't give up her seat to a Caucasian man.
  • She was suppose to go sit in the back of the bus but she refused.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. led a boycott of the busses in Montgomery, Alabama.
  • The two thought it was unfair that they get to be treated differently because they were African American.

Civil rights

  • In 1963, Martin led a march in Washington.
  • On August 28, he gave his famous "I Have A Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SPEECH
The famous "I Have A Dream" speech was a huge milestone in history. "But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination." Martin says. That means that by law we are free but society treated us like we were nothing. "This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the "unalienable Rights" of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" said Martin speaking from his heart. These words weren't only heard all over the country but they were from his heart and an inspiration to the whole nation.

A PRIZE NOT GIVEn TO MANY

  • In 1964 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Piece Prize.
  • He was awarded this Medal of Honor for his bravery and courage.

The tragity

  • Dr. King was assassinated just after 6 p.m. on April 4, 1968.
  • He was shot while standing on the balcony of a second story building.
  • That building was the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.

A moment to remember forever

  • The third Monday in January was named an annual federal holiday in 1983.
  • That day was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day!
  • We celebrate this holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • AKA MLK day.
