DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

IF YOUR PARTNER IS VIOLENT DONT BE SILENT

SEXUAL ABUSE

  • Sexually abused children are tormented by shame and guilt.
  • The shame of sexual abuse makes it very difficult for children to come forward.
  • They may feel that they are responsible for the abuse or somehow brought it upon themselves
  • This can lead to self-loathing and sexual problems as they grow older
  • False accusations of sexual abuse are not common, so if a child tell's you, take him or her seriously

PHYSICAL ABUSE

  • 1 and 4 woman will experience some form of physical violence
  • 85% of domestic violence victims are woman
  • In any form, violence and abuse profoundly affect individual health and well-being
  • Signs of physical abuse :
  • Family members provide different explainations of how injuries were sustained

VERBAL ABUSE

  • From time to time we are all likely to say something which is nasty and abusive to our partner or our children
  • Some forms of verbal abuse, such as name calling or sneering
  • Verbal abuse creates emotional pain and mental anguish
  • you can find out what is ‘wrong’ with people who are verbally abusive
  • Most people targeted by verbal abuse try to explain to the abuser why what they’ve just heard is not true

EMOTIONAL ABUSE

  • Isolate a woman from her friends,work,family,cultural or faith.
  • Act overly jealous or possessive; accuse a woman of having affairs if she talks to another man.
  • Criticize a woman constantly - her actions, size and appearance, and abilities;
  • Use a woman's disability or deafness to demean or control her;
  • Threaten, intimidate, harass, or punish a woman if she doesn't comply

FINANCIAL ABUSE

  • Financial abuse is a form of mistreatment in which someone forcibly controls another person's money
  • Stealing money,not allowing a victim to take part in any financial decisions
  • People who attempt to control and take money from the elderly have a variety of motives
  • Financial abuse is a common tactic used by abusers to gain power and control in a relationship
  • financial abuse becomes present when the survivor is attempting to leave or has left the relationship.

CHILD ABUSE

  • 1 OUT 4 CHILDREN ARE VICTIMS OF ABUSE
  • 80% of child maltreatment fatalities involve at least one parent as perpetrator
  • Child abuse doesn't only happen in poor families or bad neighborhoods.
  • Telling a child he or she is “no good," "worthless," "bad," or "a mistake."
  • Limited physical contact with the child—no hugs, kisses, or other signs of affection

BEING IN A HOME OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

  • Children in violent homes are abused at a rate of a 1500% higher than the national average
  • 63% of all boys, ages 11 to 20 who commit murder, kill the man who was abusing their mother
  • Boys who witness domestic violence are more likely to batter their female partners
  • Girls who are raised in a domestic violence house are more vulnerable to being abused
  • They may feel rage at the abusive parent, also angry at the non-abusive parent for not being able to protect them

How many people are affected: One and 4 woman are victimized by domestic violence in her lifetime , each or us know someone who has been affected whether we know it or not

IF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE NEVER HAPPENED

  • No more bruises
  • No more black eyes
  • No more threats
  • No more busted lips
  • No more getting beaten

NO MATTER

  • How many times he says sorry
  • How many times he threatened you
  • How many times he hugs you
  • How many times she blames you
  • How many times she kisses you

SIGNS OF PHYSICAL ABUSE

  • Black eyes or Busted Lips
  • She gets nervous talking about her partner
  • If you ask her why she has a bruise she will make a excuse
  • Attempting to hide bruises with makeup or clothing
  • Having to ask permission to meet, talk with, or do things with other people

VERBAL ABUSE SIGNS

  • your partner speak to you differently in private and in public
  • your partner deny being angry or upset when he/she very obviously is
  • discounts your perception of reality and denies itself
  • you often leave a discussion with your partner feeling completely confused?
  • your partner act as though you were attacking them when you try to explain your feelings

SPEAK UP

  • Tell someone
  • Call 911
  • Make a plan to get out
  • Figure out a way for the abuser to not know you are leaving

WOMAN AND MEN CAN BOTH BE ABUSERS

  • It doesnt matter what sex you are you can still be a victim or Abuser
  • More than 40% of men are victims
  • 1.3 million woman are victims
  • domestic violence can affect anyone – including men
  • Some people think it is only men abuse but thats not true

STALKING IS APART OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

  • 3 in 10 people and 1 in 10 men in the US have experienced stalking
  • Stalking is a form of abuse you are trying to control what is happening in there partners life
  • Domestic Violence stalking is a long term reality for most victims
  • Some abusers use stalking to make sure there partner never leaves or cheats
  • You are not safe just because you leave a domestic violence situation

SAME SEX ABUSE

  • Abuse in same sex relationships appear to occur with the same frequency as domestic violence
  • The differences surrounding abuse in gay or lesbian and straight relationships have to do with social context.
  • Some people belive that women are not likely to abuse each other.
  • A woman in a same sex relationship who experiences dating violence or domestic violence may face many issues
  • His/Her Partner May Hit Her, Try To Control Her/Her, or force them to have sex
