INFORMATION ON THE DOBSONFLY

  • It's other name is Corydalus cornutus
  • It's small, brown and starts a an aquatic larva, then soon turns into
  • a large air born bug .
  • Same with the females

WHAT THEY EAT

  • When in the water, the dobsonfly eats small fish and
  • Fish eggs, almost anything that's within it's reach
  • Adult dobsonflies do not eat for many weeks until it dies

HABITATS

  • They live in freshwater
  • They like to hide under rocks
  • They like to live in large streams.
  • Also, the larva live in mud at the bottoms of the stream

SIZE

  • Adult length can exceed to 3 1/2.
  • Wingspan is up to about 5 inches.
  • Larval lengh is normally 2-3 inches.
  • The largest dobsonfly ever found was 12 inches long
  • They have a set of pinchers 2-4 inches long

  • Adults are large, soft bodied, usally gray, black or brown.
  • They have wings with conspicuous veins, usually folded down when resting
  • Mandibles of males very long, tusklike, and incapable of hurting people due to lack of
  • Leverage.

  • They live in freshwater
  • They lay about 2,000 - 3,000 eggs total
  • After laying the eggs the female, goes and dies
