THEME: Everyone has the freedom to choose whatever they want.

"We should think of our family". There is an edge to his voice. "But we should also think of ourselves"(36).

"Stay away from me", i say quietly. "My body feels rigid and cold, i am not angry, i am not hurt, i am nothing"(300).

"i have no home, no path, no certainty. I am no longer Tris the selfless, or Tris the brave. I suppose now that i must become more of either"(487).

AUTHOR'S PURPOSE:
The author's purpose in this book is to inform and entertain. She also has a strong opinion that family always comes first.

Throughout the book they always say faction before blood, though Tris does not follow this rule. She is always putting her family before others.

"I start toward her, tears jumping into my eyes. She came. She came for me"(178). In this quote the author shows how Tris still has feelings for her mother and how she puts her mother ahead of her own faction.
"No". I shake my head. "I am not going anywhere without you"(443). This is another example of how the author shows that family comes first. Tris' mother tries to distract the guards so that she can get away safely but Tris refuses because she values her family first.

SUMMARY:
In this book the author defines that the story is about a 16 year old girl named Tris. The book is about how Tris tries to defeat the erudite faction and how everyone has the right to choose whatever they want. This book takes place inside a city filled with wreckage from war, the city is surrounded by a huge wall which supposedly keeps people out. "The building that was once called the Sears Tower- we call it the hub- emerges from the fog, a black pillar in the skyline"(4). This quote describes how part of the city is seen as by Tris. The author also clarifies that the story takes place in the near future since the technologies are much more advanced. This story is being told to show that family always comes first.

CONCLUSION
Divergent is a great book. I would recommend it to everyone since it is one of my favorite books. Veronica Roth is a great author, she has 2 other books in the Divergent trilogy. (Insurgent and Allegiant) Divergent has also been made into a movie recently.
