STORYTELLING OR A DISSERVICE TO MEDIATION? (START AT 1:00)

Untitled Slide

This clip is about Micheal Scott (their boss) sitting down to try to be an impartial third party and mediate the office disputes.

Among the many things he does incorrectly:
1. Doesn't tell them he is a third party neutral.
2. Immediately tries to solve the problem by forcing Angela with a ridiculous and one-sided solution.
3. Isn't actually facilitating an agreement.

Notice, both of these clips do a great disservice to the Mediation field. In fact, even though both of these media portrayals are intended to be humorous, they still do a disservice to Mediation because they are so inaccurate. This can influence viewers to adopt an unrealistic and inaccurate view that mediations are similar to these.

While those are from very popular sources...

THERE ARE A FEW HIDDEN, BUT MORE ACCURATE PORTRAYALS OF MEDIATIONS...

Even those show - while it sets up a more accurate and less humorous perception of mediations - it seems to be a little aggressive in the dramatics of the mediatior. However, at least it sets up a more accurate showing of the process. Still, it can be misleading to people that have barely heard of mediations or that do not know the actual process.

So what are the implications?
If people adopt these views of mediation that are handed to them via social media such as these shows and movies? They will not be prepared for mediation and the realities associated with this process. This can hinder the process and even create issues.
