PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Distinctio

By Caroline Kimbler and Cristina Baldor

What is Distinctio

  • It distinguishes a word in a sentence by including more info about it.
  • "At this point we have a short time left- a short time being less then fifty years"
  • It allows you to tell the reader exactly what you mean to say.
  • This can be the difference in someone understanding your sentence or not.

How can you find It?

  • words that indicate how good something is, or how likely or difficult something is
  • Distinctio is usually used with a linking phrase like:
  • "Which is to say" or "by which I mean"
  • or by putting the definition in parentheses immediately after the term your defining
  • But only do this when needed!

Example:

  • 1. Worthwhile-
  • That book was tremendously worthwhile;
  • it taught me all I needed to the know about Russia

LET'S TRY!

  • 1. Deep-
  • The man dug a hole that was very deep, similar to the Marianas trrench
  • 2. Work-
  • What do we want to work on? And by work I mean put our blood, sweat and tears into.
  • Your Turn!

YOUR TURN!

  • Standard
  • Smart
  • Crazy
  • Right
  • Write these down, we will use them again

EFFECTIVE

  • "Communism, by which I mean the socialist communalism which comes after the centralized state,
  • has yet to be tried anywhere in the real world."

INEFFECTIVE

  • The red convertible- red the color of an apple, not the red of a traffic light- was sold
  • It's ineffective because distinguishing between the two shades of red adds nothing.

NOW GO BACK!

  • Distinguish whether your previous ones were effective or ineffective
