OTITIS AND DEAFNESS

OTITIS

INFECTION OR INFLAMMATION OF THE EAR

SYMPTOMS

  • In babies: fever, hearing problems, and vomiting
  • In adults: ear aches, drainage from ear, and dizziness

DEMOGRAPHICS

  • 50% of children have it before first birthday
  • 80% of children have an occurrence by their third birthday
  • Boys are most likely to get it
  • Less common in children who are breast feeding

TREATMENTS

  • Tries to eliminate the bacteria in the ear

DEAFNESS

FULLY OR PARTIALLY UNABLE TO HEAR

SYMPTOMS

  • Loss of hearing
  • Difficulty of hearing

DEMOGRAPHICS

  • 22-36 million are hard of hearing/deaf
  • A few million are deaf

TREATMENT

  • Hearing aids
  • Cochlear implants

  • Better lighting
  • Surgery

GLAUCOMA

GROUP OF EYE CONDITIONS THAT CAN DAMAGE THE OPTIC NERVE

SYMPTOMS

  • Depends on which type of glaucoma
  • Sudden, severe pain in one eye
  • Enlargement of one or both eyes
  • Red eye

DEMOGRAPHICS

  • 2.2 million people have it

TREATMENTS

  • No cure
  • Possible to halt the loss of vision but can't regain it
