Places to visit in Kansas include...

ALCOVE SPRINGS AND WATERFALL

  • Alcove Spring is 6 miles north of Blue Rapids Alcove Spring and Waterfall Map Kansas Waterfalls
  • Alcove Spring is a peaceful place to visit. Lots of wildlife and nature live there. Just a trickle of water falls into the pool in mid-June but a lot more flows in May.
  • "Try to go in March or April so the spring is really running. A really neat stop-amazing to think of the number of people that traveled through this area during our countries great Western migration. Cool to touch rocks that travelers from the past had carved their initials into! Also some neat hiking trails to check out-they are a tad brushy so be prepared for more primitive hiking than other trails in kansas. A great spot and don't forget to check out the emigrant camp and the Big Blue River where the wagoneers crossed. Very cool. It is a primitive stop no restrooms or food available." -Janice R.

MUSHROOM ROCK STATE PARK

  • Mushroom Rock State Park is Kansas's smallest state park. It is five acre park with dirt roads. The reason it is Mushroom Rock State Park is because rocks eroded and formed together, creating a mushroom shape.
  • " This was a very interesting place to visit. If you like natural formations, then this is one place of many to visit. It is just minutes of of I-70 in Kansas. It is a nice place to take a break from traveling." -Anonymous

ELK RIVER HIKING TRAIL

  • 4825 Squaw Creek Road, Independence, KS 67301
  • Elk River Hiking Trail is a place where families and friends come to hike. It was rated best hiking trail from the Department of the Interior's National Trail System.
  • "We went on the snowshoe and fondue tour during the week of Christmas. The owner greeted us as soon as we pulled into the parking lot. The excellent experience began there and did not end. We had a great time on our guided snowshoe hike - which was customized to our skill and motivation levels. Fondue in the cozy saloon afterwards was terrific - large and tasty portions and a huge variety of beverages for purchase. The attention to detail and willingness to accommodate were apparent throughout our visit. We had an excellent time and I would highly recommend this tour." -Anonymous

MAXWELL WILDLIFE REFUGE

  • 2577 Pueblo Road Canton, KS 67428
  • Maxwell Wildlife Refuge is a place for family and friends to experience nature.
  • "We loved this! It was the first stop on our two week trip around Kansas. We stayed in McPherson the night before and it was a short drive to Canton. At first, I was sad that the tram wasn't running and we had to take the pick-up truck with the guide. But, this was a blessing in disguise. You get to do more "off-roading" in the pick up than the tram. I think you get a better tour. Make sure you go up in the watch tower and make a reservation for a tour. We saw the bison herd and would love to go back in the winter to see the elk." -Anonymous
