FAMILY LIFE

  • Rosa was the first born
  • Father: James Parks was a carpenter
  • Mother: Leona McCauley was a teacher
  • Husband: Raymond Parks was a barber
  • He was also in the civil rights movement

CHILDHOOD

  • Rosa was born February 4, 1913
  • Her childhood was filled with racial discrimination
  • At first She lived in Tuskegee, Alabama
  • then moved in with her grandparents in Pine Level
  • When rosa was young her parents separated

EDUCATION

  • At a young age she was taught to read
  • The schools were segregated and lack supplies
  • She was forced to walk to the schoolhouse
  • She went to industrial school for girls, laboratory school
  • She earned her high school degree in 1933

JOBS

  • Shirt factory in Montgomery
  • A seamstress for many years
  • An icon and leading spokes person
  • A secretary until her retirement in 1988

AWARDS

  • "The Mother of Modern Day Civil Rights Movements"
  • Selected to see Nelson Mandela on his release date
  • The presidential medal of freedom from Bill Clinton
  • Awarded the Congressional Bold Medal

Fun facts
Rosa was not the first person to get arrested for refusing to give up her seat.
Rosa was not sitting in the "whites" section of the bus. She was in the front of the "blacks" section, but because there were no other seats the bus driver demanded that those four people, including rosa, would give up their seats. The other three followed his demands except for rosa.

DEATH

  • In 2004 Rosa was diagnosed with dementia
  • Rosa died on October 24, 2005 In Detroit, Michigan
  • After her death people left the front seats open on the buses to honor her in Montgomery and Detroit
  • She was lied
