MATTER IN MOTION

DIGITAL PROJECT PERIOD 7

SPEED

  • The rate at which something moves
  • formula: speed = Distance/Time
  • If Someone walks south 0.5 miles in 5 min.
  • What is the speed?
  • A cheetah's top speed is 70 mph

AVERAGE SPEED

  • Total distance traveled divided by the total time elapsed.
  • Formula: Total Distance/Total Time
  • What is the average speed of an arrow that takes
  • 1.25 s to hit a target 75m away?
  • A horse runs 20 miles per hour or 29 feet per second.

VELOCITY

  • The speed of something in a direction
  • Formula: Velocity = Distance/Time
  • A boat traveled 100 meters in 120 seconds
  • Acceleration of freefall on the moon is 1.6 meters/sec

ACCELERATION

  • Increase in the rate or speed of something
  • Galileo was the first to show all objects fall at a constant acceleration
  • Formula: acceleration = final velocity - initial velocity over time.
  • A car gains a velocity of 80 m/s. Calculate the acceleration at 5s.

NET FORCE

  • The overall force on an object
  • F = ma
  • A force of 20 N acts upon a 5 kg block.
  • Calculate the acceleration of the object.
  • This was Newton's first law of physics
