- Esophagus- moves food to the stomach
- Stomach- crushes food. Acids & enzymes- kill bacteria & break down proteins
- Small intestine- most nutrients are absorbed
- Large intestine- water and nutrients are absorbed, compacts and stores waste.
Choking
Person eats, a flap of skin called the epiglottis covers the trachea to prevent food from entering. Choking occurs if this flap functions improperly and enters the trachea
Pair- Share
Sometimes peristalsis works in reverse, moving food upward through the esophagus. What do you think happens during reverse peristalsis?
5. Function of pancreas- makes fluid to break down all materials in foods.
6. Function of liver- makes bile, which breaks up larger fats into smaller fats. Bile is stored in the gallbladder
