MOUTH

  • Mechanical and Chemical Digestion occurs here
  • Chewing/Mechanical Digestion
  • Saliva: Chemical Digestion

THROAT

  • Food is swallowed here

ESOPHAGUS

  • Where goes down
  • Peristalsis: Muscle Contractions that move food through the esophagus

STOMACH

  • Chemical and Mechanical Digestion occur here too
  • The squeezing and churning of the stomach is mechanical
  • The acid and enzymes that break down food is chemical
  • After this, the food is now Chyme and is being released into the small intestine

SMALL INTESTINE

  • Most chemical digestion happens here
  • Contains Villi - small finger like things covered with nutrient absorbing cells

PANCREAS

  • Makes digestive juices

LIVER

  • Produces Bile
  • Fun Fact: 3/4 of the liver can grow back if it was taken away

GALLBLADDER

  • Stores and Releases Bile

LARGE INTESTINE

  • Whatever cannot be absorbed (waste) is pushed into the large intestine
  • Holds, Compacts and Destroys indigestible material
