THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

BY: MICHAEL, FAYE, HANNAH, AND STEPHANIE

FUNCTIONS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

  • Mouth- chews up the food
  • Esophagus- brings food from the mouth to the stomach
  • Stomach- breaks food down into smaller pieces
  • Small Intestine- takes the nutrients out of the food
  • Liver- Stores the extra nutrients within the body

FUNCTIONS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

  • Pancreas- makes insulin
  • Large Intestine- takes the water out of the food

Human digestive system

The major functions of the digestive system:
The major function of the digestive system is to digest your food. When the food is in your small intestine the nutrients are taken out and brought to your bloodstream. The food then goes into the large intestine were all the water is taken out of the food. Then the food goes to the rectum, then it is made into feces.

TWO DISEASES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM ARE:

  • Celiacs disease
  • When you eat something with gluten, there immune system
  • Responds by damaging/ destroying villi.
  • Hepatitis A
  • A virus, or infection that causes liver disease and inflammation in the liver

This body system works with the circulatory system because the nutrients from the food goes into the blood and gives it to the cells to reproduce. It also works with the excretory system because the food that has the water taken out of it goes the rest of the way through and then out.

The path food travels:
1. Food comes into our mouth. Then we chew the food with our teeth.the saliva in our mouth begins to break down the food.

2. The food goes from the mouth into the esophagus.

3. It goes to the stomach. The stomach has acids, enzymes, chyme, and mucus to break down the food

4. From the stomach, it goes to the small intestine. In the small intestine, the nutrients are absorbed by the blood.

5. From the small intestine, it goes to the large intestine. In the large intestine, water is absorbed by blood.

6. What is left exits the body through the rectum, and then the anus.

FUN FACTS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

FUN FACTS IF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

  • The surface area of the small intestine is the size of a tennis court!!
  • Our stomacch acid can dissolve metal, but not plastic!!
  • Our liver can preform 500 different functions!!
  • If we stand on our head, food will go " up " to the stomach
  • We eat 50 tons of food in our life. This is the same weight as 50 cars!!
