PRESENTATION OUTLINE

My Aventures Through the Digestion System

Here I go...

The mouth

Digestion starts here with the first bite of food!

Oww...

I am being ground up into tiny pieces and getting all wet!

The teeth & tongue grind up the food.

Saliva make it easier to move through the digestive tract.

a tunnel?

Also called the pharynx, the throat is the next step. The food travels to the esophagus, or swallowing tube.

Whee! This is fun!

the esophagus

a.k.a "the swallowing tube"

The Esophagus
The esophagus is a muscular tube from the pharynx (throat) to the stomach. The esophagus delivers food to the stomach.

I'm being pulverized!

Ahhhh!

The Stomach

Where FOOD turns into liquid paste!

This feels like a maze!

I just keep going and going and going...

The Small Intestine

Small Intestine

  • made of three parts, the duodenum, jejunum, and iliem
  • is a long coiled tube in the abdomen (spread out, it would be more than 20 feet long).

AHH!

More Grinding!

The small intestine

is the STAR of the digestion system!

The small intestine is where about 90% of your food's nutrients are absorbed into your body's bloodstream.

Can you say ENERGY?

energy to move!

and learn!

Untitled Slide

The Large Intestine (colon)

  • 5 to 6 - foot-long muscular tube that connects to the rectum
  • last chance to process vitamins
  • protects against harmful bacteria.

The colon
1. becomes full of stool, or feces
2. empties the waste into the rectum

I'm getting close to "the end"

The Rectum

The Rectum

  • an 8-inch chamber that connects the colon to the anus.
  • receives stool from the colon
  • When anything (gas or stool) comes into the rectum, sensors send a message to the brain

Should I stay or should I go?

The brain and the rectum

  • The brain decides if the stool can be eliminated.
  • If it can, the sphincters (muscles) relax and the rectum contracts (loosens), expells waste.
  • If not, the sphincters contract (tightens) so that the feeling temporarily goes away.

The end of the journey

The anus

The Anus

  • last part of the digestive tract.
  • made of muscles and the two anal sphincters
  • muscles stop stool from coming out when it is not supposed to.
  • sphincter keeps us from "going" until we reach the restroom

Wow! What an amazing, complex journey!
