Differences

and How We React to Them...

Difference

A point or way in which people or things are dissimilar.

Why do we notice Differences so much?
Why do we react so differently?

Well, it is a survival instinct. It comes from when we were cavemen and had to watch for small things to alert us.

Our Brain

  • Receives signals from Eyes
  • Analyzes surrounding and messages
  • Notices that something is off (different)
  • Wonders why and comes up with possible reason, or takes action (such as asking)
  • Sends out hormones that trigger positive/negative reaction

When you notice something different, what is the 1st thing YOU do?

The Experiment

  • I showed my 10 test subject 5 pairs of pictures
  • The 1st of every pair showed the ideal object, the 2nd one was the same item but not what you normally see.
  • I asked the subject to record the first thing that came to their minds, while I recorded their facial reactions. I asked for complete silence.

Next Time Improvements

  • Larger Sample Size for my experiment to get more accurate/diverse data.
  • More drastic differences for the experiment.
  • Recording of the experiment so that I can analyze them more.
  • More consistent locations for more accuracy.

Next Time Improvements cont.

  • Maybe allow the subjects to use verbal reactions? I didn't allow any this time because I didn't want any distractions
  • I don't think I spent enough time planning my project so I would plan ahead more next time. This was probably because I changed my project a few times to really find something I was interested in.
