DIET WHILE BREASTFEEDING

CREATED BY: NICOLE MESSER, HANNAH THORP, AND MICHAEL SHEFFIELD

FOODS TO EAT

  • Protein rich foods: fish, poultry, dairy, eggs, etc.
  • 3 servings of vegetables, especially dark green and yellow ones.
  • 2 servings of fruit
  • Whole grains

MORE GOOD FOODS

  • Drink lots of water to keep hydrated.
  • Any dietary restrictions from pregnancy don't apply.
  • Vegetarianism is possible, just be sure to eat iron rich foods like nuts and beans.
  • Veganism is also possible, but you must take a B12 supplement.

HOW MUCH TO EAT

  • Nursing requires extra calories.
  • If you still have your baby weight the calories will naturally be taken from there.
  • If not then you may need to consume an extra 500-600 calories.

PROBLEM FOODS

  • Alcohol may be consumed while nursing. However, you should wait 2-3 hours after each serving.
  • Caffeine is also okay to consume in reasonable quantities. If the baby has trouble sleeping you should cut back.

ALLERGIES

  • Some babies develop allergies to foods their mothers eat.
  • The most common ones include dairy, soy, wheat, egg, nuts, and corn.
  • Usually the best way to figure out what's causing a reaction is through a meal diary.
