DIABETES

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

TYPE 1 DIABETES

  • Little to no insulin (Insulin injections are required)
  • Born with it or develops at a young age
  • Symptoms appear suddenly

Type 2

  • Pancreas makes insulin but not enough
  • Body doesn't use the insulin correctly
  • Dependant on diet
  • Symptoms appear slowly
  • Appears later in life

AGE OF ONSET & %

  • Type 1: Less than 20 years old
  • 10-15% of diabetics have Type 1
  • Type 2: 40-60 years old
  • 85-90% of diabetics have Type 2

SYMPTOMS of Type 1

  • Frequent urination
  • Extreme hunger & thirst
  • Weight loss
  • Weakness, tiredness, & blurred vision
  • Symptoms appear suddenly

Symptoms of Type 2

  • Increased thirst, hunger, & appetite
  • Feeling sick to stomach
  • Hard to heal infections
  • Tingling or loss of feeling in hands or feet
  • Symptoms appear slowly or not at all

COMPLICATIONS

  • Diabetic Coma
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Nephropathy
  • Myocardial Infection
  • Brain Infarction

TREATMENT: Type 1

  • Sugar-controlled healthy diet & exercise
  • Daily insulin injections
  • Regular testing of blood sugar

Treatment: Type 2

  • Sugar-controlled healthy diet & exercise
  • Keep in normal weight range
  • May need diabetes pills or insulin shots
  • Regular testing of blood sugar
