TYPE 1 DESCRIPTION

  • You're born with it
  • Your body produces little or no insulin
  • Insulin is absolutely required to sustain life
  • Injections of insulin is needed daily
  • The usual age of onset is younger than 20 and only 10 - 15 % have type 1

TYPE 2 DESCRIPTION

  • The body either doesn't produce enough insulin or isn't able to use it
  • A sugar-controlled diet is neccesary
  • Some people will need medications, others will need injections
  • The age of onset is usually between 40 and 60
  • 85-90 % of all diabetics have type 2

TYPE 1 SYMPTOMS

  • Urinates often, nausea and vomiting
  • Mood changes and feeling edgy
  • Extreme thirst and hunger
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Weakness and tiredness

TYPE 2 SYMPTOMS

  • May or may not feel any symptoms, they appear slowly
  • Often thirsty, hungry, and nauseous.
  • Increased urination
  • Infections
  • Blurred vision

TYPE 1 COMPLICATIONS

  • Diabetic coma
  • Hypoglycemia, amputation
  • Nephropathy, brain infarction
  • Blindness, neuropathy
  • Myocardial Infarction or MI

TYPE 2 COMPLICATIONS

  • Hypoglycemia, amputation
  • Blindness
  • Renal failure
  • Stroke
  • Decreased nerve function

TYPE 1 TREATMENT

  • Sugar-controlled healthy diet and exercise
  • Daily insulin injections
  • Regular testing of blood sugar level

TYPE 2 TREATMENT

  • Sugar-controlled healthy diet and exercise
  • Keep in normal weight range
  • Some people may need drugs or insulin shots
  • Regular testing of blood sugar level
