A CITY OF DREAMERS

DHARAVI AS A WHOLE

  • Dharavi is India's largest slum centered in the heart of the city of Mumbia
  • Here, over 1 million people live and prosper to the best of their ability, within what the space allows (1 sq. mile)
  • Within this area, living conditions are hazardous.
  • The sewage pipes are open, there is trash everywhere, and houses threaten to collapse at any minute
  • Yet, they manage to earn a living, fend for their family, and prove to the world that they are worth something

THE PEOPLE

  • The majority of residents here work unimaginable jobs to earn livings
  • Some look though trash, searching for any recyclable materials that could be salvaged
  • 80% of Mumbia's recycled materials are processed here
  • While others work in textile factories, producing material for the rest of the city to use
  • Even though they are barley making ends meet, they still strive to give their children a good education

THEIR HOUSES

  • The people live in houses which are very broken down and unreliable
  • They have an insufficient amount of water and unreliable electricity
  • Their homes are infested with rats
  • Their living space is very small and every individual has the share his area with several others

HOPE

  • The people hope that one day, they'll get their big break
  • Yet they pray that the city never does away with their slum
  • Although their living conditions are impossible, they still consider Dharavi to be their home
  • And no matter where their fate takes them, they will never forget the place that taught them so much
