OVERVIEW

  • Canada did not fight a war
  • Mutual agreement with Britain on independence
  • England wanted to avoid other major wars
  • Granted Canada control of major internal affairs

DIVISION: TWO ETHNICITIES

  • 7 Years War gave British control of Canada from French
  • Because most settlers were French, they made compromises
  • But in American Revolution, British loyalists migrated to Canada
  • This increased ethnic tension

UNIFICATION: WAR OF 1812

  • Ethnic tension was a threat, BUT war of 1812 unified the people
  • Canadian victory+common enemy = sense of nationalism
  • Result: economic growth and surge of English immigrants
  • Not wanting a major war, Britain gave Canada control of its affairs

WESTWARD EXPANSION

  • Fear of US expansion pushed Canadian expansion autonomy
  • British North American Act of 1867 made Dominion of Canada
  • Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick
  • Established federal government

FURTHER EXPANSION

  • First Prime Minister Macdonald strengthened the Union
  • Purchased Northwestern Territories, British Columbia, Manitoba...
  • Built transcontinental railroads in 1885
  • This helped to establish Saskatchewan and Newfoundland

Conclusion
Canada had a diverse culture, but they united to peacefully drift from Britain and create a politically unified state.
