WHAT HAPPENED❔

  • Late in the night, Renisha McBride crashed her car while in Suburban Detroit
  • She crashed into a parked car 1.5 miles away from the soon to be murder scene
  • She was extremely drunk
  • She was disoriented and looking for help
  • Keep in mind, this is all happening at 4:30 a.m.

🔹THE SCENE🔹

  • 3 hours later, McBride arrived at Theodor Wafer's house
  • She banged on his front door and made a scene on his porch
  • He shot her to death, saying "I feared for my life."
  • Wafer did not understand that he shot a teenager

♦️COURT♦️

  • Wafer was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter
  • He was sentanced to 17 years in prison
  • This is when Wafer appologized to McBride's family
  • The trial lasted 9 days
  • After nine days, the court ruled that Wafer had no reason to be afraid

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Catholic Social Teaching principal involved in the case
  • Theodor Wafer has the right to own a gun
  • But he also has the responsibility to use it correctly
  • Renisha McBride had the right to ask for help after an accident

NOT JUST A TRAGIC MURDER

  • This case again raises the issue of gun control and ownership
  • Should Wafer have had possesion of a weapon?
  • If he didnt have a weapon, would this have happened?
  • Many speculate race was involved
  • The court could not find any souces of racism that motivated Wafer
