  • Born on December 17, 1760 in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
  • After spending 5 years in 2 other homes, Deborah, at age 10, was given as a servant to Deacon Benjamin Thomas, a farmer in Middleborough, who had a large family.
  • She was a patriot because she wanted independence.

Life After War

LIFE AFTER WAR

  • In 1802 she began making appearances as a lecturer, concluding her highly, romanticized speech by dressing in a soldiers uniform and performing the manual of arms.
  • After Sampson recovered from her injury, she went back to her home in Massachusetts.
  • In 1805, the United States Congress awarded her a pension because of her wounds. She died on April 29, 1827

INTERESTING FACTS

  • She served in the Revolutionary War in America disguised as a man.
  • On May 20, 1782, she successfully enlisted in the army on the order of Master Noah Taft of Uxbridge, Massachusetts.
  • About June 1783, Sampson was hospitalized in Philadelphia because of a high fever, and her identity was discovered.
