Dead Zone

Areas in the ocean with lower oxygen then usually, causing fish to suffocate and die.

Human Impact

There are many physical, chemical, and biological factors that can create dead zones, but nutrient pollution is the main cause of those zones created by humans. Farmers use synthetic fertilizers in their crops and some food people throw their food in body's of water.

Social/Economic Impacts

  • NOAA which funded the scientists' research, estimates that the dead zone costs the U.S. seafood and tourism industries $82 million a year.
  • Can reduce the fish people are used to and depend on eating
  • It effects the economy and fishers because all the fish are dead.

SOLUTIONS

  • We can stop poring extra nutrients into body's of waters
  • We can ban synthetic fertilizers from being used in crops

RESISTANCE

  • Farmers will backlash because farmers depend on synthetic fertilizers to grow and sell crops faster
