SYMPOSIA BY SARAH REMLAND

Everybody has heard of the Sons of Liberty, but why are the Daughters of Liberty mentioned so little? This was the question I asked myself and I set out to find what the Daughters of Liberty did in the American Revolution. I wanted to do further research on this topic because I don't think men should get all the credit for what happened in the Revolution, and I wanted to know what the equally important woman did. I got my information mostly off of websites, because books do not mention the Daughters of Liberty. The exception was the book," Liberty!" which was were I found out that the daughters of liberty existed.

The Daughters of Liberty did many things that helped with the Revolution, but most of the average woman were not as hands on about it as men were. Here are some things that the Daughters of Liberty did to help with the Revolution. They refused to buy anything from England and instead created the goods themselves. They created homespun cloth and found substitutes for tea. They also helped Congress decide that boycotting against British goods was the best thing to do. I can infer that because of the boycotting the Daughters of Liberty did, Britain got very discouraged. They mostly damaged Britain's economy, and would have given an economist a lot to talk about. Their group was made of about 92 woman, and Deborah Sampson, a woman that dressed up as a man to fight in the war, was the leader of this great group.
