DATING CUSTOMS

OF THE LATE 1600'S

DATING CUSTOMS

  • They had to ask the man of the house to court their daughter.
  • They had to have a chaperone watching them.
  • The couple could not touch hands
  • After a couple months, they were ENGAGED!!😘😍❀️

DATING REGULATIONS

  • Only on Saturday night, the boy could go over to the girls house and court.
  • They couldn't go to separate room and talk.
  • Everyone in the house could hear what they were talking about.

PURITAN POLICY

  • Marriage was not religious, it was a civil contract.
  • Before the "marriage", the towns people could voice any objections.
  • The couple had a quiet and simple wedding/dinner
  • The parents allowed the couple to use a courting stick( a tube that the couple could whisper through while the parents were in the other room.)

TRADITIONS!

  • The couple could sleep in the same bed as long as they had a bundling board between them. That is called bundling.
  • Apparently, after the couple got married, they got a marriage license just like today's customs.
