Databases vs Search Engines

A search engine is a type of database. It catalogs websites on the web. When you search by keyword it matches items that correspond to your search.

Search engines do not evaluate the content they are cataloging. It doesn't matter if it's quality. Everything is included.

Library databases are a catalog of quality information sources.

Library Databases include the following:

  • Photos
  • Websites
  • Books
  • Maps
  • Newspapers
  • Magazines (both popular and scholarly)
  • Transcripts
  • Podcasts

The main difference between databases and search engines is the quality of the content. Reviewers determine what content is included.

Databases require a login and password because they are a paid subscription service. We pay for the quality of the resources.
