School guidance counselors are responsible for partnering with administration and teachers to ensure the success of students academically, socially, emotionally, and in career and college readiness (American School Counselor Association, 2017). One of the current trends in guidance and counseling is social-emotional learning (SEL). This aspect of a counselor's role is one that requires an understanding of how to collect and analyze data related to SEL, as well as how to use that data to implement curriculum and methodologies. As a future counselor, I will need a systematic approach in order to help the campus achieve the goals of meeting the needs of all students. (Elias, 2016).

An emerging trend in education is the implementation of SEL data, and Laguna Beach, California is paving the way for educators as it incorporates SEL data with academic data to create a more holistic picture of student needs (Keller & Odipo, 2017). (Haiku Deck, 2018). [Image].

The goal is to combine data in one central program for analysis and to determine what actions are necessary to reach each student (Keller & Odipo, 2017). One way this future trend can be introduced in the guidance and counseling field is through the use of SEL surveys completed by students. Each year, students can take an approved survey for their specific grade level, and the staff can collaborate to analyze the data. (Haiku Deck, 2018). [Image].

This information would show the strengths and approximations of the social and emotional needs of the students, as well as determine the course counselors will need to take to reach all students successfully (CORE Districts, 2017). Another benefit of data-driven SEL is that administrators and counselors can collaborate to determine what curriculum and methodologies will best address student needs. The approach to SEL through data provides an overview of the entire campus and allows for a more proactive approach to reaching all students (Keller & Odipo, 2017).

This video is an advertisement for SEL surveys and other resources available to educators to help collect data. The benefit of surveys is that each student has a voice. The challenge is that all students may not be truthful. (Extension Center, 2017). [Video file].

Another challenge is that guidance counselors will have to provide evidence of the benefits of data-driven SEL and partner with teachers to incorporate specific programs or strategies. In the best scenario, all stakeholders will embrace the move toward data-driven SEL systems, and student success will soar (Keller & Odipo, 2017).
