Darfur is located in the western part of Sudan. It is about the size of France and is home to around 6 million people.

In 2003 the violence in Sudan escalated. The government responding to the rebellion in Darfur, began attacking civilians. Over 300,000 were killed and over 3 million displaced.

In Darfur there was a rebel group that wished for Darfur to become separated from Sudan like South Sudan had. The government responded by not only targeting the group but also civilians.

Attacks on Darfuri villages began with Sudanese Air Force bombings. Followed by militia raids. All remaining men, women and children forced to flee. Afterwards dead bodies are tossed in wells to contaminate the water.

The attacks are carried out by a group of government armed and funded Arab militias.

The ones targeted are Darfuri men, women and children

George W. Bush called for the number of international troops in Darfur to be doubled.

British prime minister Tony Blair wrote an open letter to the European Union calling for a response to the crisis. In 2007 deployment of 26,000 peacekeepers to try and stop the violence.

In 2009 the international criminal court issued an arrest warrant for the Sudanese president Omar-al Bashir. However the Sudanese government has yet to turn him over.

The issue is still not resolved today. There has been no progress since 2011 and there have been 400,000 newly displaced in 2014.
