BACKGROUND

• Born in Chengdu, China on March 2, 1954
• His mother was a parasitic doctor
• His father was a tailor then a lung specialist
• Sijje grew up working in his father tailor shop
• Sent to Sichuan to be reeducated

BACKGROUND CONT.

• After reeducation he returned and attended highschool
• Later he went to a university and studied art history

CAREER

• At age 30 he received a scholarship to study Western Art and Cinema
• Directed 3 films in France, but none were popular
• Wrote Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
• Book became an immediate hit in France
• Chinese-French author amd filmaker
