Operation Overlord (a.k.a D-Day) took place on the 6th of June 1944. It was a invasion on France to penetrate the atlantic wall. The Atlantic wall was a line of German defenses to keep the western allied nations from invading Europe.

Six locations were chosen to be battle grounds for Operation Overlord. These locations were Omaha beach, Utah beach, Point du hoc, Sword beach, Gold beach, and Juno beach.

Why did the allies invade Normandy? Well they couldn't invade a lot of places because either the germans were there, Or because the conditions of the place were extremely bad.

after intensive planning.156,000 allied troops invaded the beaches of normandy in 5 bloody battles.

They were out manned but we were out gunned. We ended up losing over 10 thousand troops with only 4 thousand troops confirmed dead. A tragic loss on our side with only 4 thousand dead on their side

When all five battles were over with (besides point du hoc) it was an allied victory. A victory in which made the germans suffer. They surrendered almost a year after on may 5th, 1945

POINT DU HOC

PRETTY AMAZING STORY SO I'LL GIVE IT IT'S OWN SLIDE

Point du hoc was a german position where a large gun stockpile was during wwii. A little bit before the other landings on d-day 100 rangers went to destroy this stockpile but were 40 minutes late do to a navigation issue. So the rangers had to climb these steep cliff sides with rope ladders while getting shot at by The german. The rangers persevered through the germans surprisingly as they were cutting the ropes and pummeling them with gunfire. When they finally reached the top of the cliff the guns had been moved to another location. They then went in a random direction and found the guns aimed at Utah beach. They destroyed them with thermite grenades and had completed the mission

FUN FACTS

  • The d in d-day does not represent what you think. It Actually means the time of day
  • All of the battles were supposed to happen on the 5th but was post-poned because of bad weather.
  • The allies had set up wooden soldiers and rubber tanks around the english channel to divert the germans attention from normandy.
  • Like the dummies fake dolls with explosives strapped on were dropped from planes all over normandy during the war. These dummies were named ruperts.
