Definition of Cyber Bullying:

  • The use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature

Cyber Bullying Statistics:

  • Over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying.
  • Well over half of young people don't tell their parents when cyber bullying occurs.
  • More than 1 in 3 young people have experienced cyber threats online.

Statistics continuation:

  • One million children were harassed, threatened, or subjected to other forms of cyber bullying on Facebook during the past year.
  • Fewer than 1 in 5 cyber bullying incidents are reported to law enforcement.

Statistics continuation:

  • Mean, hurtful comments and spreading rumors are the most common type of cyber bullying.
  • 1 in 10 adolescents or teens have had embarrassing or damaging pictures taken or themselves without their permission, often using cell phone cameras.

  • About 1 in 5 teens have posted or sent sexually suggestive or nude pictures or themselves to others.
  • Cyber bullying victims are more likely to have low self esteem and to consider or commit suicide.
  • Only 1 in 10 teens tells a parent if they have been a cyber bully victim.

Preventing Cyber Bullying:

  • Don't give out passwords!
  • Keep photos "PG"!
  • Pause before you post!
  • Never open up unidentified or unsolicited messages!
  • Don't be a cyber bully yourself!

Ways to stay safe:

  • Log out of accounts especially on public computers.
  • Be careful with how much personal information you share.
  • Educate yourself on what cyber bullying is.
  • Inform your friends on what cyber bullying is and how to stay safe.

Take Action:

  • Block the person!
  • Save messages or screen shots!
  • If personal harm threats occur contact authorities!

Violence is never the answer!

  • Speak with a trusted adult!
  • Report to authorities!
  • Seek legal counsel!

Ways to get help:

  • Call this hotline: 1-800-273-8255
  • Talk to an adult (parents,school counselor, teacher, therapist, etc.)
  • Contact the police if the cyber bullying becomes threatening or harmful and doesn't stop!

Megan Meier was a 13 year old girl who struggled with weight and self esteem issues. A neighbor posed as a teen boy online and showed a romantic interest in her before eventually sending cruel, disturbing messages. Megan hanged her self five weeks later.

Amanda Todd was in seventh grade when she started to used video chat to meet new people. One stranger convinced her to bare her breast on camera. The stranger attempted to used this photo against her it, it circulated the internet. The stranger kept following her , she got bullied at school, and eventually she hung her self

Rebecca Sedwick was just twelve year old and received messages saying "if you haven't killed yourself yet,would you please just die?" Her mom took her off of those accounts but the bulling continued. With the mom unaware Rebecca started using other accounts like kik, received more you should die and you should kill yourself message. Finally she replied i am dead. I am jumping. I can't take it anymore! She jumped off a concrete tower and died!
