On Saturday night, April 18, a man began a shooting spree in Nova Scotia. He killed at least sixteen people before being killed in a shootout with police on April 19. The shooter was Gabriel Wortman. He was 51 years old. His motive is still unclear. He was dressed as a police officer.

This is newsworthy because the article talks about the most recent mass shooting. Over the past few decades, there have been more and more mass shootings. People are worried about their safety and gun control.

Many times the reasons for mass shootingS are unclear. This makes them even more frightening. Many people think this mass shooting is particularly worrisome because the man was dressed as a police officer.

I chose this topic because I didn’t want to choose anything that had to do with Coronavirus. I also think that it is important to talk about. It is shocking that this is still happening during a pandemic.

This topic fits into the civic lens because it affects every town. Police departments and first responders in every city have to practice handling a mass shooting. Law makers need to make decisions about gun control. One of the first things people consider in a politician is his or her view on gun control.

I think this fits into the cultural lens because mass shootings like this cause people to live in a different way. There is more security like metal detectors. People are more afraid of large gatherings in public places. Schools and businesses practice active shooter drills.
