PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Current Events: Highschool: Hatsune Miku banned in schools in Japan

Hatsune Miku is a voice bank character for the software "Vocaloid", which simulates human singing. Miku is usually depicted in anime style with teal hair styled in Twin Tails. The software was created in Hokkaido by the company crypton

Her voice is an unusual, soprano Anime Voice actor lolita style voice provided by the anime voice actor "Saki Fujita"

She has became quite famous in Japan, and is even getting some recognition in the US

But she isn't always well received. Miku and other vocaloids are considered part of the "Otaku" fandom, of which consists also of Anime and Manga. It is considered geeky and the word Otaku, which means big house, can be used as an insult to refer to people who stay in their houses.

Some schools in Japan, mainly in the Kanto and Hokkaido perfectures, though have even began to ban the listening of Vocaloids during school

They claim that "She's just a machine" or "We don't know the lyrics" or "It is brainwashing". It has caused a stir from vocaloid fans alike

A twitter post exchanging the topic gained a fair amount of attention.

It read:
“At my little sister’s school, they’ve been forbidden from broadcasting Vocaloid music during recesses. They gave reasons like “because it’s a machine” and “because we don’t know the lyrics.”
I don’t like to see them banned for reasons like that. They may be machines, but they still sing songs capable of moving the human heart. These prejudices are grossly disrespectful to Vocaloid producers and programmers.
I wish they’d stop promulgating such misunderstandings.”

A radical defender of the school's banning of vocaloid replied saying that vocaloid was brain washing. He goes by the name: 2ch

2ch stated:
“Doubtless because they are associated with otaku.”

“Seems some places even broadcast anime songs during lunch.”
“This atmosphere really is unpleasant.” “Imagine having to listen to a bunch of anime music which reeks of otaku all lunch, it’d ruin the atmosphere.”
“Who cares what music they broadcast at schools. It’s just for the self-satisfaction of one lot of them over another.” “Imagine playing one of those Miku songs with lyrics about meltdowns in one of the contaminated zones, it’s no wonder they are banned!” “This is pure creepy otaku doing. The ones who want to play that stuff are just creepy otaku who’ve become too big for their boots.”

The reporter did not give his/her opinion. My opinion on the issue is that just because Miku, or any other vocaloid isn't a real person, doesn't give anyone the right to ban vocaloid. It would be like banning the reading of books, just because the characters aren't real
