Summary
A bronze box was found from an ancient shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera in 1901. The box never did attract a lot attention until then. The device is called the Antikythera Mechanism. It has interlocking gears that were designed to predict eclipses and calculate the positions of the sun, moon and other planets. Some scholars describe the device as the world's first analog computer. A scientist and historian named James Evans, says that the device came from 205 B.C. It would mean that the device was built at a time when scientific traditions from multiple cultures were coming together to create a new view of the cosmos.
