Curaçao is a small, elongated tropical state found in the southern Caribbean Sea. Due to this location, the island is a part of the southern windward islands group and hurricane belt, but is rarely threatened by storms.

Curaçao was conquered by the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1634, only recently allowed to control internal affairs in 2010. This Dutch rule has influenced the spreading of Roman Catholicism, which is the major religion on the island.

Curaçao enjoys a relatively developed infrastructure. The island produces an annual 1.167 billion kWh, higher than two of its neighbors, Aruba and Barbados. According to the National Census, 90% of homes found in Curaçao are considered of adequate living conditions and there are 53.6 internet users per 100 households.

Curaçao's average birth rate for 1000 people in a population is 14.10, and the average death rate is 8 people per 1000. The difference of these numbers, also called the Crude Birth Rate and Crude Death Rate, calculates the natural population growth rate. For Curaçao, this percentage is 6.10%, which is higher than the United States' 5.27%.

Many languages inhabit Curaçao, including Dutch, which is the official language. Another language, named Papiamentu, is indigenous to Curaçao and the rest of the former Netherlands Antilles. Born a Dutch-English-Spanish-Portuguese Dialect, Papiamentu is voiced by over 80% of Curaçaoans. This is more than ten times that of Dutch-speakers.
