Location:

Relative: Bordered by the countries of Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia &Herzegovina, Montenegro & Slovenia, and the Adriatic Sea

Absolute: 45 degrees 10' N & 15 degrees 30' E

Region: Southeastern region of the European Continent and the northern & eastern hemispheres

Major Physical Features:

RIVERS: Danube River (2nd largest river in Europe & one of the most important waterways on the continent), Drava River, Krka River & Save River

LAKES: Lake Vrana (biggest lake in Croatia), Plitvice Lake (group of 16 small lakes connected by waterfalls)

MOUNTAINS: Dinaric Alps run through Croatia rising to 6,005ft.

COAST: Land is rocky, steep & hilly along the coast & on most of the countries islands.

Major Human Features:
Dubrovnik Walled City - Dubrovnik is one of the most beautiful medieval cities in the world. It is a Dalmatian city that is at least 1,300 years old. The city has walls on 3 sides and is surrounded by the sea with many historical buildings that have art and history value.
Pula Arena - Located in Istria, this is one of six largest surviving Roman amphitheaters in the world built in 27-68 AD.
Hydroelectric Power Plant - Second oldest operating hydroelectric plant in the world located in Sibenik. Oldest plant is Niagara Falls.
Zagreb - The capital of Croatia since 1991 & largest city, is a tourist destination & a main intersection between the Adriatic coast & Central Europe. The city has road, air & railroad access to all major cities & tourist resorts in Croatia. Zagreb has a rich history dating from Roman times to today. Zagrebs buildings are under 10 stories because of a long-standing restriction.

Major Human Features continued:

BASKA TABLET- Dating from about 1100 (4 centuries before America was discovered) the Baska Tablet is the most famous monuments of Croatia. It was discovered in 1851 by a local priest in the Church of St. Lucija in the stone on the floor. It confirms the existence of Croatia in the early days.

Human/Environment Interaction:

-waters along the coast have been damaged by domestic & industrial waste
-air pollution & deforestation are environmental problems inland because of the metallurgical plants causing acid rain
-the capital city of Zagreb does not allow buildings over 10 stories, buildings taller than 10 stories are in the outskirts of Zagreb

Region of the World

CULTURAL REGION-There is a link to the people of Croatia and the Holy Roman Empire that dates back to the 9th century. Croatia has a long & complicated past with many invasions over the years.
PHYSICAL REGION: Croatia is part of the Balkan & Mitteleuropa region. The country is separated into 3 major regions:
1)Dinaric Alps -high lands containing the highest peak (Dinara) at 1,831 meters
2)Pannonian Basin-many low lands making up 53% of the country's land area
3)Adriatic Basin-coastline of 1,777 km draining the largest river in the basin, the Neretva
HUMAN REGION-Croatia has many ethnic groups. The largest is the Croats and others are Serbs, Hungarians, Czechs, Albanians, Slovenians and more.

Government
Croatia's government is parliament democracy/ presidential. The president is Ivo Josipović and the prime minister is Zoran Milanovic. Croatia's government is the main executive power for their government and is led by the president and the prime minister. The president is elected for a 5 year term & may only serve 2 consecutive terms. The president nominates the prime minister from candidates the Croatian Parliament nominates. There are also 20 other members of the government that are chosen by the prime minister. The Croatian Government is responsible for the daily decisions of the country. Croatia became independent from Yugoslavia on June 25, 1991. Croatia is a peace loving type of government.

Items are manufactured in Croatia in factories which has lead to pollution. Things made in the country for exporting include heavy machinery, transport equipment, textiles, chemical, food (olive oil) and fuels. In the summer months, tourism brings in a lot of money.

Education
The education in Croatia is valued and the literacy rate is 98.9%. The average person goes to school for 15 years. A child can start kindergarten as early as 1 year of age. Elementary education lasts 8 years and is mandatory and free for all children ages 6-15. Secondary education includes high school and vocational school that is also mandatory. Croatia also has universities to attend. In elementary school subjects include Croatian, math, music, art, nature and society, a foreign language, gym class and religion. Secondary classes include history, biology, geography, chemistry, physics, and IT.

Family
Three generations living in the same household used to be very common in Croatia, but more and more young married couples are living on their own after getting married. When a newly married couple lives with their parents , it's is usually with the husband's parents. Many young couples live with their parents because of a shortage of housing. Many grandparents will take care of their infant grandchildren in the home.

Those in Croatia live in households very close to what we live in in the US. The dad is usually the head of the house, but the mom helps to make decisions. Women also will go to college to get an education.
Holidays celebrated in Croatia include: New Year's Day, Easter Monday, Feast of the Assumption of Mary, All Saints' Day, Christmas, Statehood Day (May 30), Patriotic Gratitude Day (August5) & St. Nicholas Day.

1) Roman Catholic- 86.6%
2) Orthodox- 4.4%
3) Muslim- 1.5%
Religion is very important to the Croatian people. Churches are usually full for a mass.
Religious holidays: Easter, Assumption of Mary, Christmas, All Saints Day and Epiphany.

TECHNOLOGY

  • Cell phones are very popular with 4.9 million mobile phone users.
  • Internet access is widely available with 729,420 internet hosts and 2.234 million internet users.
  • Tv- the 4 largest channels are state owned, along with many local and world wide stations.
  • All forms of technology are excepted in Croatia and most people use them every day.

International Issues

Heroin - transported from Southwest Asia to Western Europe by the Balkan route
Cocaine - transported by ships from South America to Western Europe

Border problems between Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina over access to the sea since the early 1990's.
Croatia & Slovenia also have claims to the same area in Pirin Bay and four villages.

Since Croatia gained its independence it is a peaceful country.
