"...investigate whether the number of music credits a student has earned is related to their math grade point average (GPA) or to their cumulative GPA at the high school level"
CRITIQUE The study is not of sufficient value to be read by other music educators. If music educators wanted a study to support the significance of their program, it would not be effective.
CRITIQUE However, if the music educator were doing further research in the same area, this study would be a good starting point; learning from this study would be beneficial.
CRITIQUE I would be interested in viewing this study from various angles. I would like to see this study in larger schools, and in schools with more performing ensembles.
CRITIQUE One of the defining factors of the validity of this study would be to see if it is a trend in multiple schools in various regions of the country.
CRITIQUE I would also like to see this study performed in larger schools. Larger schools tend to have multiple performing ensembles (i.e. band, choir, orchestra, etc.) and require students to enroll in at least one fine arts class.
CRITIQUE It would also be interesting to develop a way to rate each performing ensemble. I believe the quality of the performing ensemble could have an impact on the results of the study. Does participation in any quality of performing ensemble positively effect GPAs?
