CRITICAL MASS THEORY

& THE SHAPE OF THE PARISH

REAL LIFE APPLICATION

  • Think of a new ministry or service you created
  • What steps did you take to launch it?
  • What did you do to keep momentum?
  • Was/is it sustainable?

CRITICAL MASS THEORY

  • Core
  • Supporters
  • Fence-Sitters
  • Passive, Cynics
  • Amplify Critical Connections!
Amplify Critical Connections!

1) Build core of high competence & commitment
Identify who these people are, empower them, coach them, reward them, connect them.

2) Encourage Supporters, offer training and coaching, pay attention.

3) Fence-Sitters: invite, listen, ask them about perceived concerns.

4) Passive/Cynical: invite their thoughts and do not let their inertia or counter-dependence derail you and your team.

RELATIVITY: IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT MASS
Critical mass theory has it's roots in the idea that you want to develop a solid base of support to offset resistance to change. However, some researchers are now questioning whether this "resistance" might be better characterized as "ambivalence." Quantum science challenges our old ideas of linear, one-way scientific theories by demonstrating the importance of complexity, chaos, and relationship in our systems.

In physics, critical mass is when you reach the point after which nuclear explosion takes place. In terms of gravity, it is what pulls things to the center.

DIMENSION & SHAPE

WHERE IS THE ENERGY IN THE SYSTEM?
It is important to use critical mass theory as a lens to describe our organizations and see where the energy is centered. Do we have an inverted system, in which those who are most passive and cynical outnumber those of highest competence and commitment? If so, our efforts will need to reflect that.

SHAPE OF THE PARISH

  • Apostolic Core
  • Sacramental Faithful
  • Christmas & Easter Attendees
  • Vicarious "Members"
This core framework is an interpretation of critical mass theory. A key point is to focus on the support and development of those of Apostolic Faith. We sometimes focus on the outer rings, thinking we can pull them in. If we make the inner core our focus, we can demonstrate how attractive that is, and make sure we are providing ways for others to venture inward.

WHO ARE CRITICAL CONNECTORS?

HOW CAN YOU CHANGE THE SYSTEM?
Are there methods and avenues to reach and invite the gifts of all? In what ways can you, or have you, supported the discovery of shared passion in the parish?

ASK GOOD QUESTIONS

DON'T NEED TO HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS
Vulnerability: a key stance that allows us as leaders to acknowledge that we don't have all the answers, but through faith in God and trust in one another, we can find the answers to some of our most vexing challenges.

PROVIDE CLEAR PATHS

TO ACCESS INNER, DEEPER CORE
Formation is key here. Is your church grounded in prayer? In what ways can members incorporate their faith into their daily lives, and beyond Sunday morning worship?

In the Sacramental ring, there are those of more and less developed faith and practice.

Even if I'm not in the Core, can I see a clear path to get there?

DEDICATE TIME

TO THOSE WITH HIGHEST COMMITMENT
It is easy to get derailed by the squeaky wheels, by putting out fires, by day-to-day issues that sidetrack us from our mission and our long-term vision. It is worth it for all those of high competence and commitment to dedicate time together to support and affirm one another, as well as to challenge and expand ideas, assumptions, and mental models.

EXAMPLES:

IN SCRIPTURE AND PARISH LIFE
Can you think of an example from Scriptures where it started with the Core and moved outwards? (Acts).

Can you think of a time in the parish when growth was seen because of the depth of spiritual formation and leadership of those in the Core?
