New Year, New Norms

Why Norms?

  • Norms can help clarify expectations, promote open dialogue, and serve as a powerful tool for holding members accountable (Lencioni, 2005)
  • Explicit team norms help to increase the emotional intelligence of the group by cultivating trust, a sense of group identity, and belief in group efficacy (Druskat & Wolff, 2001)

Focus of the Norms

  • Represent protocols and commitments to guide team members in working together.
  • Help team members clarify expectations regarding how they will work together to achieve their shared goal.

Time to Create

  • With your grade level team, look over the list of "Things to Consider."
  • Talk amongst your team and decide on no more than 5 norms that you are going to adhere to this year through your collaborative weekly work in PLCs.

Time to Create

  • Once you have decided on them, write them on the chart paper provided to you (use markers please) following the template posted.
  • When you are done, bring them up to the front table.
