THE HISTORY OF CRAFTING AND ACTIVISM
- Crafting as a form of activism has been around for over 100 years
- So where did it begin?Men wanted women to be oppressed and thought that whilst crafting women weren’t thinking. The suffragettes however had other plans
- How did the suffragettes use crafting to further their cause? They created banners, posters and other items to spread the word of what they were trying to achieve. The right to vote
- So why use crafting? They used crafting because technology was sparse, and crafting was already something they were good at so they used the skills and supplies they already had.
Craft has been used by women to protest and campaign for well over 100 years. Crafting, in particular embroidery was used as a way to oppress women, teach them feminine characteristics, but of course they used it as an outlet. Men thought that whilst women were crafting, they weren't thinking, but how wrong they were.
The suffragettes used it to advertise, campaign and stand against thier oppression. They created over 150 banners, and even stitched postcards and posters, just like the one I created here for the Young Women's Trust.
These women used what they had to hand, technology was sparse, so these women took the skills they had, and those skills made them powerful
