COSIMO DE MEDICI

BY CARLYJOHNSON

BIRTH/DEATH DATE AND LOCATION

  • He was born on September 27th, 1389
  • He died on August 1st, 1464 at age 74
  • He lived, worked, and was born in Florence, Italy

HIS MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

  • He worked at the Medici bank
  • He ruled Florence for 60 years

WHY IS THE LOCATION IMPORTANT?

  • Florence depended on the trading of goods
  • Mostly trading of wool and banking
  • Families who did that were important in the city

HUMANISM

  • With all of the money from the bank he supported artists and sculptors
  • Churches and libraries were built
  • With all the money spent on it, Florence became the world's most beautiful city

HUMANISTIC THINGS HE DID AND WAS INTERESTED IN

  • Cosimo studied the works of authors and manuscripts of classical writings
  • He was interested in Ancient Greece and the philosophy of Plato
  • He founded 3 libraries in Florence that have collections of books and manuscripts
  • He organized the Plato Academy and people would go and translate some of Plato's work

HUMANISM QUOTE

  • "All of those things have given me the greatest satisfaction and contentment because they are not only for the honor of God but are likewise for my remembrance. For fifty years, I have done nothing else but earn money and spend money; and it became clear that spending money gives me greater pleasure than earning it."

THE QUOTE REPRESENTS HUMANISM BECAUSE:

  • He enjoys spending money more than earning it
  • He spent his money on artists, sculptors, architects, and making the city better
  • Him spending that money makes him a humanist because the art and buildings built made people enjoy their life more

HOW DID THE MEDICI BANK CHANGE BANKS TODAY?

  • After the Medici Bank closed new families began the banking buisness
  • Foundations that support things like research and art is because the Medici's did that
  • The Medici's did book keeping, networking, and advertising like we do today
