PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Coral Reefs

The ocean's largest contributor to marine biodiversity

Coral reefs...

  • Protect coastal settlements from large waves
  • Provide food and homes for countless of species of fish
  • Can be melted into limestone to make houses
  • Attract tourists that contribute to the local economy balance
  • And are just plain breathtaking!

But the corals are suffering from what is called bleaching.

The polyps that live in the coral die, and the colour fades from the coral.

This is happening because of

Pesticides from our crops leak into the ocean...

which makes large masses of seaweed cover the coral, and block out the sunlight that they need.

We dump toxic waste into the ocean that kills the polyps

Our anchors and boat hulls smash the coral to bits.

But you can help

When you dive, don't touch.

Otherwise the coral will die.
