copyright, fair use

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Copyright

...and Fair Use, too!

Can I use this in my classroom?

Using things in classrooms and lessons

  • Look for a "C" within a circle, which denotes a copyright
  • If you see TWO Cs within a circle, that signifies that its free to use, and is coming from "Creative Commons"

I looked, and saw a copyright symbol...now what?

It's copyrighted, so...

  • The best thing to do is contact the owner, asking permission
  • If they give it, GREAT! Use it!
  • No dice? Sorry, Charlie...make your own, or look elsewhere...

But I'm a teacher, and it's for EDUCATION! So it's FAIR to USE it, right?

Fair Use

  • AFTER your attempt to contact the creator fails, see if it qualifies...
  • 1. Did you transform the original?
  • 2. Is it factual, creative, or consumable?
  • 3. Did you only use the amount necessary?
  • 4. Are you taking someone's profits?

Questions? Comments? Concerns?
