MAN IN A STATE OF NATURE

  • Thomas Hobbes : Man in a state of nature is a state of war or fear
  • John Locke : Man is bound by natural law and can be discovered through reason
  • Jean Jacques Rousseu : Man in a state of nature is good, society corrupts

SOCIAL CONTRACT

  • Thomas Hobbes : Power surrendered to sovereignty. Man has no right to resist.
  • John Locke : No man may harm another in his life, liberty or possesions.
  • Jean Jacques Rousseu : Agreed to be bound by the will of all.

IDEAL FORM OF GOVERNMENT

  • Thomas Hobbes : The people mutually agreed to create a state on agreement for protection for themselves.
  • John Locke : Government cannot violate natural law or contract broken. subject no longer bound.
  • Jean Jacques Rousseu : Majority rules - no minority rights - no limited government.
