- on the flat between Palatine and Capitoline Hills
- originally a marketplace
- earliest forum was the Forum Boarium (Cattle Market)
- by early republic it was lined with stalls and boothes
- people socialised shopped and carried out business

- enlarged by Sulla in 80BC
- burnt in 52BC
- Curia Julia built for optimum acoustics

- demolished for expansion of Curia Hostilia
- replaced by Saepta Julia
