WHO IS DRED SCOTT?

  • Born  as a slave into the Blow Family in 1795
  • Peter Blow was his first owner and John Emerson was his second owner. 
  • He was one of the many catalyst for the Civil War

SETTING THE SCENE

  • Scott marries another Army Doctors slave
  • Emerson dies and Scott attempts to buy his freedom
  • Scott has already lived in freedom

Dred Scott v. Sanford

  • Court cases started in 1846
  • Lost initial suit in St. Louis court
  • Won second trial, but then overturned

  • Scott filed his 3rd suit in 1854
  • Lost in Federal Court
  • Successfully appealed to Supreme Court

Supreme Court Trial

  •  Supreme Court's decision was issued 11 years later after initial suits
  • 7 out of 9 judges in favor of Sanford
  • Chief Justice deemed as property not U. S citizens

effects of the Dredded Decision part 1

  • North was in outrage
  • South loved the outcome
  • Made  Civil War inevitable
After the decision the north was in total outrage while the south loving the outcome.This help grow the separatism between the north and south making the civil war inevitable.

Effect of the Dreaded Decison part 2

  • Returned to Blow Family
  • Blow family granted him his freedom.
  • Dred Scott died in 1858 at 63 years old.
Since he was too controversial to keep after the decision and Mr. Emerson returned scott back to his previous owners the blow family. In 1857 Scott and his family was granted freedom from the Blows. After being free Scott went to St. Louis. Then a year later he died of tuberculosis on September 17,1858.
