ARTHUR MILLER- EARLY LIFE

  • Born in Harlem, NY. 1915
  • Isidore- father- ran successful coat manufacturing business
  • Augusta- mother- read novels daily- educator
  • The family almost became broke from the stock market crash.

  • After graduating high school- worked several odd jobs to attend University of Michigan
  • Wrote first play while in college called "No Villain"
  • Studied history and economics

  • Married several times during lifetime
  • 1. Mary Grace Slattery
  • 2. Marilyn Monroe
  • 3. Ingeborg Morath
  • All ended in divorce
  • Four children- two from 1st and 3rd wives

  • Compiled 26 plays during that time span.
  • Won the school's Avery Hopwood Award for No Villain

SALEM Witch Trials

  • First arose- spring 1962
  • Young girls- possessed by the devil
  • Witchcraft- capital crime in Massachusetts Bay Colony

SALEM WITCH TRIALS

  • First convicted- Bridget bishop- hanged June 1962
  • 150 men; women; and children accused of witchcraft
  • Trials lasted until 1693

SALEM WITCH TRIALS

  • May Phips released all whom were accused
  • January 1697- a day of fasting declared in remembrance of the tragedy of the trials
  • The supernatural were believed to be part of everyday life.

  • Gave Arthur Miller inspiration to write The Crucible
  • Senator John McCarthy- anti- communist- "witch hunts

THE PURITANS

  • English Protestants
  • Fled England to reform the English church
  • Imagined they were reenacting the Exodus
  • Believed in leading simple, easy lives

THE PURITANS

  • 1630- left England to sail to North America
  • Strict Calvinists- followers of John Calvin
  • Established Massachusetts bay colony

  • Bible- central to their worship
  • Believed liturgy was still too catholic

  • If they honored obligations to God- would be blessed
  • If not- would be punished
  • High literacy rates
  • Parents- wanted children to read Bible
  • Punishment- hanging; stockade; public whipping
