REASONS

  • Both the East China Sea and South China Sea have resources
  • These range from oil to natural gas, shipping lanes and fishing grounds
  • China, Korea, and Japan are involved
  • Other countries are as well: India, countries in SE Asia, and even the US
  • Economic tension is palpable, but these nations are also each other's biggest trading partners

MIGRANT WORKERS

IMMIGRANTS FLOCK TO LARGE CHINESE CITIES

MOVEMENT IN CHINA

  • In 2012, the number of migrant workers in China increased by 3.9 %
  • Mostly uneducated, untrained workers who have come to work in factories
  • They are paid poorly and often work in some of the worst conditions
  • Most move to cities, which are already overpopulated
  • They can't receive basic education or get decent housing

NORTH KOREA

RELATIONS WITH

CONTINUAL TENSION

  • North Korea continues to be a major threat to safety in East Asia.
  • Growing nuclear capabilities force other countries to negotiate with Kim.
  • News of labor camps and forced, public executions shock nations.
  • Relations between N. + S. Korea have completely broken down.
  • N. Koreans are persecuted on daily basis by their own government.

RELATIONS WITH JAPAN

HISTORICAL FEUDS IN THE 21ST CENTURY

TENSION WITH JAPAN

  • S. Korea wants Japan to show more repentance for its past.
  • Tension remains from the Annexation of Korea, which ended in 1945.
  • Both countries claim disputed territory in the Sea of Japan
  • Japan recently unveiled a giant warship flying the old imperial flag
  • These two actions are seen as aggressive by both Koreans and Chinese.

TIBETAN PLATEAU

TIBET IS LOCATED IN WESTERN CHINA, BORDERING NEPAL.

FREE TIBET

  • Tibet was incorporated into China in the 50s
  • There are been many moves for Tibet to be independent
  • International groups have stood with Tibetans to protest against Chinese rule
  • Tibetans sometimes set themselves on fire to protest Chinese rule and persecution
  • Anti-Chinese sentiment in Tibet is heavily pressed by Chinese authorities
