Strategies for Struggling Readers 11.2
I'm not teaching PD, I'm sharing.
-notes from the trenches-
We are all struggling readers.
Things that cause struggle:
- TIME
- SPACE/SILENCE
- MOTIVATION
- LACK OF SKILLS
- DIFFICULTY OF TEXT
Processing used for decoding not available for comprehension
Model (they think we were born reading from the womb)
Academic and required reading vs. choice reading
Classroom Time
- How much time do students actually spend reading?
- Weigh any activity-is it worth doing instead of reading?
Accountability
- reading checks
- open-note
- annotations in text
- open text
Start small and build stamina
Delineated time frame with accountable measure at end
For some students - it is a "walk in the park", others are "climbing Everest".
Consistent accountability for reading at home
How much time are they reading?
If they are not reading at home and there is no time spent silently reading in your class...
They may go an entire year WITHOUT READING.
...this means they will end the year MORE BEHIND than they began.
Strategy: Article of the Week
Strategy: rehearsed reading
Strategy:10 minute/sponge book
Writing practice is more visible than reading practice. Don't let that stop you.
Strategy: alternate reading
Strategy: recorded reading (key passages, whole sections, important quotes)
